This week, as unofficial official team photographer of the San Francisco Golden Gate Women's team, I took to the field with these lovely ladies at Cal State University East Bay aka Cal State Hayward to face the newly formed (and kitted) Life University West.
After a bunch of games and no place to really put the photos I shot, I decided to put them on Rugby Period because this page/site has been a bit neglected as of late and they need a consistent home. So here goes...
The stadium is a beautiful bowl set right into the Hayward Fault line, almost like you are climbing down the stairs to visit San Andreas herself. If there was an earthquake, we would have to pull out our climbing gear to get to our cars. These steps were not easy given the number of injuries to the SFGGW ladies in recent weeks.
Fortunately, this season the rugby gods blessed the team with a huge depth of skilled and passionate players. So passionate, they even put on their tribal face paint before games to summon their rugby ancestors and to "look good when they play."
Warmups for this match were particularly intense. The ladies, all face painted up and ready for war took to the artificial turf of of the Earthquake Bowl and got straight to business. The first drill was led by their coach, still wearing a fresh pair of diapers. Not to be confused with Kevin, mind you. Wait, this guy might be out of diapers, Kevin might not.
No seriously, warms up were getting warm. The sun was blazing atop the hillside bowl.
Warmups done and the whistle was to blow. Jersey up ladies and listen to y'ur capt'n. Naima has been been playing rugby since the 1800's and with her 200 caps and years of experience, she knows how to hold a straight face before the game.
In all seriousness, the game was soon to get underway and it was sure to be a battle... even the CSU East Bay (aka EB) baseball team was taking time away from their game vs CSU Dominquez Hills to watch the hard hitting style of Bay Area women's rugby.
It's hard not to watch this game and fall in love because there is nothing on the planet like it. These women literally give their heart and soul to their teammates. And it shows.

After a long, hard fought battle with a couple injuries, the ladies of SFGG and Life West put on a great show for the crowd and my camera lens. Thank you ladies!
